The photographs in this display were taken by an unknown photographer from the newly built Park Towers Housing Commission apartment block sometime in 1969.

Announced by the Housing Commission of Victoria at the time of its opening as the tallest high rise residential block in the Southern Hemisphere, the towers became a new landmark in South Melbourne and superseded the South Melbourne Town Hall as the highest vantage point for photographers working in the suburb.

Together these photographs give a time capsule view of South Melbourne in 1969.

The display provides back ground on the site Park Towers was built on, the Housing Act of 1937, and the subsequent development of the Housing Commission of Victoria.
