Cr James Laurence Murphy

J L Murphy was the representative for Port Melbourne in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1917 to 1942. He also served as a South Melbourne councillor from 1904 to 1942, including a term as mayor in 1910-1911.

James Laurence Murphy was an Irish-born cordial manufacturer who came to Melbourne in the early 1880s as a young man. He established the Plummer & Murphy brewery, manufacturers of aerated water, cordials, and vinegar. He lived in South Melbourne until his death.

Murphy, a Labor representative, played a prominent role in the development of affordable housing in South Melbourne and Port Melbourne, in particular in the Garden City housing development across the road from J L Murphy Reserve. As a politician, he was best known for his advocacy of the Fair Rents Court.

A reserve in Port Melbourne is named in his honour.
