Heritage Recognition Program
The City of Port Phillip manages a program through which sites of historical significance across the municipality are selected for recognition. A plaque is installed at each site which provides information about the site's history that is no longer evident from standing at the site itself. The heritage plaques and the program encourage further exploration of Port Phillip's history.
Council's Cultural Heritage Reference Committee, comprising a Councillor, representatives of the Port Melbourne and St Kilda Historical Societies and the Middle Park History Group, and local residents, assess nominated sites against the Heritage Recognition Program criteria outlined in the Heritage Recognition Program Guidelines.
Fifty-three sites have so far been included in the program. These sites represent the diverse history of the area, and explore themes such as the arts and entertainment, transport, noteworthy residents, industry, commerce and architecture.
