Sands & McDougall Melbourne Directories

Sands and McDougall started publishing as Sands and Kenny and in 1857 produced their first Melbourne Directory. In 1862 the company became Sands and McDougall and continued to publish their directory every year until 1974.

In 1902 a Victorian country commercial section was added. In 1911 all of country Victoria was included in the listings.

The directory has three main sections - an alphabetical listing of surnames; a house by house, street by street listing within each suburb, and a trades and professions alphabetical listing. There are other smaller lists which include government departments, societies, churches and municipalities.

These directories are useful in house research as addresses can be found when originally unknown, and the street listings can be used in conjunction with the rate books.

The Sands and McDougall directories are available to view on microfiche at the Port Phillip Heritage Centre.

The State Library of Victoria also holds digitised copies of every fifth year of the Sands & McDougall directories from 1860-1974. These directories are accessible at:

Other Victorian directories

As with the City of Melbourne valuation books, these directories may prove useful in the absence of rate books. The St Kilda Library has microfiche sets of the following directories:

  • Port Phillip Victorian Directories 1839-1867
  • Port Phillip Government Gazette 1843-1851
  • Bailliere’s Victorian Directory 1868-1872, 1875, 1880-1881
  • Wise’s Victorian Post Office Directory 1884-1885, 1888-1889, 1891-1900
